Based in the mountains of Northern Malawi

you will find the YEWO solar-powered workshop, where we offer ethical craftsmanship meets elevated design to create jewelry that you can genuinely feel good about.

Ultimately the products we buy are an extension of the person we want to be. And we know that you want to make the world a better place through the pieces you bring into your homes & lives. Founded by duo Maddy McAllister and Kyle Snell, we believe in using business as a force for good. Our pieces are designed and ethically handcrafted in-house using hypoallergenic recycled brass, sterling silver posts, and a whole lot of love.

YEWŌ, Pronounced Yay-Woh, is a Tumbuka word meaning ‘thank you’ in Northern Malawi. Our name is a reflection of the authentic gratitude we hold for the people behind our products, the planet that we all share, and for you, the intentional consumer who believes that the jewelry we wear and the objects we bring into our homes should be a reflection of our values. We invite you to celebrate these intentional moments of gratitude, everyday.

Every Yewo purchase provides in-house skill training, consistent employment, and resources for unemployed individuals living in rural Malawi. Yewo employees are provided daily nutritious meals, health care assistance, 26 annual paid-days off, access to interest-free loans, annual raises/bonuses, and a 2x1 pension savings program. In addition, your purchase supports the Yewo Community Initiative which is a local educational outreach program to provide the salaries for 2 primary school teachers to help reduce class sizes, as well as equitable scholarships for students who would otherwise not have the opportunity to attend secondary school.

Long story short, we have worked hard to create a safe, encouraging, and family-like work environment where individuals are supported and pushed towards personal growth and leadership, while holistically supporting the local community. And you know what's cool? Your Yewo purchase allows us to do all of this. Not bad for a pair of earrings, hey?

We acknowledge that everything we make has an environmental impact on the planet. This is why we are actively working towards offsetting our carbon emissions within our value chain to become a low impact, carbon-neutral producer. Here are some of the steps we have taken so far:

  • Renewable manufacturing practices: Our entire workshop runs on renewable energy- our electric machines, tools, and community charging station are all 100% powered by the sun!

  • Sustainable, plastic-free packaging: Our labels and marketing material are made at our workshop from consumer byproducts and turned into recycled card-stock within Malawi. Retail orders are shipped in small cotton bags handmade by a group of mamas from Manchewe village. Wholesale orders are shipped in compostable plant based bags

  • Consciously sourced materials: we utilize up-cycled raw materials and source locally whenever possible. We buy our thick wire from a small nearby co-op who make the wire from old coins and scrap brass

  • Re-forestation efforts: like many places, Malawi is facing alarming rates of deforestation. Yewo has so far planted close to 1,000 trees around our community, and hope to make this a major priority for the coming years

Unlike most brands, we own and operate our solar-powered workshop and live part of the year on the ground in Malawi. This unique opportunity not only ensures our daily commitment to ethical employment and low impact production, but it also allows our customers an honest insight of where their product originated from, who made it, and the impact they are making with their purchase. We hope that this transparency and global connection inspires you to continue supporting brands that align with your values as we work towards creating a more equitable and sustainable world.

There truly is power in the consumer market. Let’s use it for good.
